But it baffles me why the decision was made to simply lowercase all schema/table names, thus ensuring that anything with mixed-case schema names would simply be incompatible with Presto.Īs to fixing the core issue.not sure I can/will. So I suppose a lot of the above is venting, sorry. I've also noticed at least a few tickets over the years where other connectors have had to had changes made to them in order to get around the lowercase everything method. I have a case-sensitive colume(utf8bin collation). It's very, very annoying not have a note of this behavior somewhere in the documentation so people are aware of it. Mysql Case insensitive search (and order by case insensitively) in a case-sensitive column. In fact, I wouldn't trust myself, coming at this with no experience in this code base, to do a good job in that short of a time something that's so central (the metadata information) to the entire application. Which I doubt, in that time, I can properly go through and make a proper change throughout the entire Presto code base. To match lower only or upper only cases we have to use binary command to make binary matching. As in I can take a week or two to throw together an internal application which will handle much, although certainly not all of our needs, and of course is far, far less than what Presto has but will mostly fulfill our immediate, short term needs. As we have seen all the above cases are case insensitive. So, there's no reference as to why that decision was made or what purpose it was to solve for.Īll that said, yes I can go through and do a quick job of hacking out the lowercase checks and wherever lowercasing is done in the main presto code (ignoring connectors for the moment), but I'm certain that it will have far reaching consequences for which I can't know of or even know if any of the existing tests will catch. There doesn't appear to be any tickets that it's part of, or even any reference in the release notes for the release 0.181 that it's part of ( ). This seems to be something that goes all the way back to 2012 with commit While I do appreciate that philosophy, on the other hand Dain in both of those links expressed a longstanding desire to change it to allow for mixed case metadata names. Or one of ya'll prove me wrong in the next few days and fixes this or correctly documents how to make it work. now you just need to get case insensitive name like if you search Hardik then it should get all records even if its in uppercase, lowercase or capitalize. I'm very, very sad about this, and seriously hope that one day in the future this will be fixed. I needed to create a query that did a case insensitive search using the LIKE command in MySQL and I quickly realised that in order to do this I would need. So as of this time, much to my disappointment, I have to say Presto fails to meet almost any of our needs even though on paper it looks like it most definitely should (especially the cross-connector JOINs). MySQL case-sensitive LIKE search less than 1 minute read When searching for partial strings in MySQL with LIKEyou will match case-insensitive by default. Unless there's other discussions elsewhere that I haven't found. While you should always uphold the case-sensitive tablenames, it can be troublesome when migrating from a host that had this option enabled (table & column. yet even after 2 years there seems to be absolutely NO motivation or effort, or even really caring whatsoever about this issue. This tutorial article will show you how to use the LIKE operator to search a column. I've found a few references such as !topic/presto-users/2tN7HWUb0LI/discussion and bringing up the issue. We have a few different MySQL instances/DBs that we want to use in conjunction with Hive via Presto, however we have been running lower_case_table_names=0 (see ), and Hibernate of course created the tables with camel-case names. While you can use a scalar function such as UPPER or LOWER and you can re-collate the column so that it's no longer case sensitive, these approaches all require data conversion be done against the base data which will never allow for an index seek.I'm new to Presto and evaluating it's usefulness to us, but I'm running into a huge problem. 9/1/2023 0 Comments Voice classes near meThe amount of air that comes in depends on the excursion of the diaphragm and ribs, which in turn de-pends on the extent of release in the abdominal and pelvic floor. Singers goal is being able to con-trol the amount and the speed of air that enters or leaves the body, and so, one has to learn to work with the muscles that enable the breathing process in order to control the air- flow. This is the process of exhalation decreasing the size of the chest cavity in order to force the air to leave the body. By decreasing the size of the chest cavity, the pressure inside of the body becomes higher again and so, in order to equalize it with the outside pressure, the air will want to leave the body. This expansion forces the air di-rectly in the body in order to equalize the pressure and the process that is called inhalation happens. According to this, air will go in the body when lower pressure is created there that happens when the chest cavity expands. Given access, it flows from areas of high pressure into areas where pressure is lower. Air is a gas and, like all gases, its natural tendency is to maintain equal pressure. The air pressure inside of the human body is different than the one on the out-side, in the space that surrounds the body. ROACH: -than you do of a body with a pump-Yeah, oh no, it’s quite frightening. ROACH: Well, you’ve got to think of juices, vapors, and you’ve got to think of the body more like an aggregation of absorbent sponges leaking one into the other. So, what did they mean when they talked about the passions? Joseph Roach is interviewed by Barbara Bogaev.īOGAEV: Let’s start with how people in Shakespeare’s time understood the passions, because their essential concept of how the body worked. We invited Joe into the studio to explain it all, in a podcast we call Suit the Action to the Word, the Word to the Action. That difference holds the key to understanding this history. When it comes to the question of scientific understanding of this subject, the principal word in that title is “Passion.” That’s a word we use today, but it meant something completely different in Shakespeare’s time and for decades after. This book is called The Player’s Passion. This was a question no theater historian had ever examined before, demonstrating the arc of our understanding of how and why the human body does what it does every day, and how that translates to the stage. While we were discussing what we might talk to him about, we picked up a book that he wrote back in the 1980s that is a remarkable exploration of the history I just mentioned: exactly how scientists and doctors, clergy and common sense have explained over the years how an actor can induce an emotional response in audience members, just by skillfully reciting words written by someone else. Last fall, right after he retired, he taught a seminar here at the Folger Institute and we wanted to have him on the podcast. Joseph Roach was a professor at the Yale School of Drama for 21 years. But it turns out, doctors and scientists have always thought they understood this phenomenon … even though, if you look across history, you’ll find that the firm assertions of medicine aren’t really firm at all. Modern science has a firm grasp on exactly what is happening. Of course, psychologists and psychiatrists could give you their ideas about how actors can make you angry or make you cry at the theater. I’m Michael Witmore, the Folger’s director. Why? Why do you feel like this? What is happening?įrom the Folger Shakespeare Library, this is Shakespeare Unlimited. Visit our blog The Collation to read a series of posts from the twelve members of Roach’s 2018 “What Acting Is” seminar, examining textuality, temporality, mentality, and physicality in the actor’s performance. He recently joined us at the Folger Institute for a seminar titled “What Acting Is.” He is interviewed by Barbara Bogaev. The Player’s Passion: Studies in the Science of Acting, one of a number of books by Roach, was originally published by the University of Delaware Press in 1985 and was reissued by the University of Michigan Press in 1993. Joseph Roach was the long-time Sterling Professor of Theater at Yale University. We talk with Joseph Roach about historical theories of acting that affected how our favorite playwrights wrote and even made their way into the most influential acting techniques of the 20th century. How do actors do what they do? How do they stir up emotions, both in themselves and in us as we watch them? Joseph Roach’s 1985 book The Player’s Passion: Studies in the Science of Acting examined how the actor’s art has been understood by scientists, philosophers, actors, and audiences through history: from Shakespeare’s 17th century, when actors emitted animal spirits through their eyes, to David Garrick’s 18th century, when pneumatic tubes transmitted emotion from the brain to the body. 9/1/2023 0 Comments Dead space remake leclercYou will still need to go down the right grid spaces to secure the upgrades you want, and there is always the option of resetting your upgrades for a fee. Both benefit from a new upgrade system that requires power nodes to upgrade various statistics, such as overall health or damage, and, more importantly, removing useless blank spaces to ensure players are getting every bit out of the rare upgrade material. Then we have the weapons, like the iconic Plasma Cutter, and the various Resource Integration Gear (RIGs) that Clarke can don as suits. The powers of Stasis and Kinesis can turn the tide, with the former an ever-useful tool to slow enemies down for perfectly aimed shots, while the latter gives Clarke control of most objects, even dismembered Necromorphs, to use as makeshift weapons. Thankfully, even with just his mining tools and engineering know-how, our hero continues to grow into a bonafide badass as players progress. The attention to detail is commendable, that is, if you are not already trying to run away from the flesh monsters trying to eat you up. Visually, it is arresting and amazing, and on the gameplay front, this helpfully shows how powerful or ineffective some weapons can be, how damaged the Necromorph is, and the probability of the limb being cut off. This means that every hit from any of Clarke’s weapons can potentially expose the creatures’ skin layers, muscles, bones, and organs. In addition, Motive Studio has reconstructed each of the Necromorphs around the new Peeling System, a godsend for those that love to bask in the blood and gore. These enemies have never been easy to overcome, and strategic dismemberment is the only way to go, where being calm in the face of danger will help your aim and planning. Other characters Clarke meets have new interactions and dialogue too, lending additional depth and motivations for how things ultimately turn out on the ship.Īll these bells and whistles are definitely welcomed, but it wouldn’t be vintage Dead Space without the threat of the Necromorphs. The fact that Isaac Clarke, voiced by Gunner Wright, now speaks as he does in Dead Space 2 and 3 adds to the immersion, with the questioning of his sanity now more relatable and personal to players. It is a testament to the excellent work of the developers that Dead Space is an experience that constantly had us on edge, and always relieved to find the next Save Station. The USG Ishimura has never felt more alive, or dead in this case, where every step in the confined corridors amping up the sense of dread and pervading tension. Certain sections of Dead Space have gotten a facelift, while new sidequests and areas become a fresh surprise for those returning to relive the best kind of torment.Īt the core of it all is the Frostbite engine, with every texture, animation, effect, and enemy behaviour all benefiting from a more modern engine. That is not all, as Motive Studio has also gone under the hood when it comes to gameplay and narrative, adding in bits and pieces of lore to flesh out further the unfortunate demise of the USG Ishimura and its crew, the Marker, and everyone’s favourite fleshy monstrosities that are the Necromorphs. The developers have built on the already solid foundations of the original, ushering in a terrifyingly enjoyable time that is powered by enhanced audio together with elevated and stunning visuals, all designed to capture players in a vice-like grip of neverending survival horror pleasure. While there is always the option of replaying the game that started it all, the Dead Space remake is, without a doubt, the best and recommended way to step into the boots of Clarke. The setup is straightforward enough to get anyone remotely interested in the genre to sit up and take notice, but it is everything else that truly makes this remake such a stellar return to the series. Alone and trapped with only his engineering tools and skills at his disposal, Isaac faces a battle for survival, not just against the monsters on board, but also against his rapidly crumbling sanity. The ship’s crew has been slaughtered, and Isaac’s girlfriend, Nicole, is missing. Sadly for him, a living nightmare awaits. Dead Space stars Isaac Clarke, an everyman engineer on a routine mission to fix a gigantic mining starship. 9/1/2023 0 Comments Ordering insomnia cookiesThis bud is also potentially helpful for individuals who battle insomnia on a. 9/1/2023 0 Comments Girl style black pompom beanieThe beret fits snugly around the head, and can be "shaped" in a variety of ways – in the Americas it is commonly worn pushed to one side. Wear A soldier of the Italian Folgore Brigade wearing a beret. The black RTR beret was made famous by Field Marshal Montgomery in the Second World War. He tossed it across, and Gatehouse gingerly tried it on. Hanging on the wall was his Basque beret from Pamplona. The specifications were that it had to protect men's hair from the oil in a tank but not take up space in the cramped interior, and he led Gatehouse straight to his room. Dorman-Smith had toured Spain, including the Basque region, with his friend Ernest Hemingway during the past few years, and had acquired a black Basque beret during his travels. While the two officers were serving at Sandhurst in 1924, Gatehouse, who had transferred to the Royal Tank Corps, had been given the task of designing a practical headgear for the new corps. Another possible origin of the RTR beret is that it was suggested to Alec Gatehouse by Eric Dorman-Smith. They were approved for use by King George V in 1924. After seeing these during the First World War, British General Hugh Elles proposed the beret for use by the newly formed Royal Tank Regiment, which needed headgear that would stay on while climbing in and out of the small hatches of tanks. Military berets were first adopted by the French Chasseurs Alpins in 1889. In Western fashion, men and women have worn the beret since the 1920s as sportswear and later as a fashion statement. By the 1920s, berets were associated with the working classes in a part of France and Spain and by 1928 more than 20 French factories and some Spanish and Italian factories produced millions of berets. The first factory, Beatex-Laulhere, claims production records dating back to 1810. Originally a local craft, beret-making became industrialised in the 19th century. The commercial production of Basque-style berets began in the 17th century in the Oloron-Sainte-Marie area of southern France. The Basque-style beret was the traditional headgear of Aragonese and Navarrian shepherds from the Ansó and Roncal valleys of the Pyrenees, a mountain range that divides southern France from northern Spain. Such headgear has been popular among the nobility and artists across Europe throughout modern history. History Īrchaeology and art history indicate that headgear similar to the modern beret has been worn since the Bronze Age across Northern Europe and as far south as ancient Crete and Italy, where it was worn by the Minoans, Etruscans and Romans. Berets are worn as part of the uniform of many military and police units worldwide, as well as by other organizations. Mass production of berets began in 19th century Spain and France and the beret remains associated with these countries.
